The argument for separates is that they are versatile: buy a top and a bottom and you have four outfits instead of one. It is a good argument. It is also, for most people, not what happens.

What actually happens

You buy the top. The bottom you were going to pair it with is the wrong weight, or the wrong length, or the colour is nearly right in a way that is worse than clearly wrong. The top stays in the cupboard waiting for a partner that never arrives.

A set removes that failure mode. The two halves were chosen together, in the same fabric weight, cut to the same proportion. There is no decision left to get wrong, which is why the sets get worn and the orphan top does not.

The real arithmetic

Take Bairan Blue at ₹4,999. That is a printed top, matching flowing trousers, and the jewellery — rings, earrings, a pendant. Priced as separates by any brand you like, you are not saving money by assembling it yourself, and you are spending an evening doing it.

When separates genuinely win

Three cases, honestly:

You already own the other half. If you have the black baggy jeans, buying one good top at ₹635 beats buying a set with trousers you will not wear.

Your top and bottom sizes differ by more than one step. A set sized as one unit will fight you. Buy separately and get both right.

You are building a wardrobe, not solving an occasion. Basics earn their versatility over a year. Sets earn theirs on the night you need them.
